Chapter 9

Brooke peered out her car window, into the Kroger parking lot. Even though it was eight o’clock in the evening people were streaming in and out the grocery store as though it was the dinner rush. Palmer wanted to take her out to eat and she suggested that they meet in the parking lot of the popular grocery store. She certainly didn’t want him to know where she lived.

Brooke perused the area again, and with no sign of Palmer, she settled back in her seat. She was grateful to have her car back. Addison’s mechanic had fixed the problem and even some potential ones. Now her car was running like it was brand new.

She had finally worked up the nerve to call the recruiter, she had told her that she had been in an accident en route to the interview and had been too drugged up on pain medicine to call her. Brooke wasn’t sure if the recruiter believed her or not, but she had encouraged Brooke to continue to apply to open positions in their company.

It was too late to call Jaden. A bolt of sadness hit her heart. She missed her son. Ebony was making herself scarce. She hadn’t heard from her in a while. She made a note to herself to call her tomorrow, just to make sure she was doing okay. Her cell phone rang, jolting her.

“Where are you?” Palmer barked as soon as she answered.

“In the parking lot.”

She could hear Palmer sigh. “I know that, but what aisle.”

“I don’t know.”

“Well either get out your car or drive to the end of a row. I’m not going to spend my fucking night driving around a Kroger’s parking lot.”

Brooke rolled her eyes. There isn’t enough money in the world for this shit. “Hold on, I think I can see something from my car,” she muttered. She squinted and made out a number and she told him.

“I’ll be right there,” he said curtly and without a good bye he clicked off the phone.

A minute later he rolled up next to her. He impatiently motioned for her to get into his truck.

Brooke intentionally took her time collecting her items before getting out of her car then locking it. All the while she could feel Palmer glaring at her.

As soon as she slipped into his truck and slammed the door, he roared off, nearly hitting a couple of shoppers. “Be careful,” she murmured.

Palmer was quiet on the ride to the restaurant. Brooke tried to make conversation but after a few curt responses she stopped. “Maybe this isn’t a good night for you to go out. You can take me back to my car and we can do it another night,” she offered.

Palmer grinned sheepishly, “I’m sorry, work was a bitch. I just finished with a conference call. I have some clients who are trying to pull out of a multi-million dollar deal. And if they do, I’m gonna have to sue their asses.”

Brooke smiled at him, content with his explanation.
